How does a differential help a car turn corners?

When your vehicle corners, the outer wheel travels a significantly greater distance than the inner wheel. This means the outer wheel must rotate quicker. If the wheels were locked at the same speed, you would experience poor handling and traction loss.

Power enters via the driveshaft, turning the pinion gear. This rotates the large ring gear, which is attached to the carrier assembly. Inside the carrier, smaller spider gears interlock with the side gears connected directly to your axle shafts.

Crucially, during a turn, the spider gears activate, rotating on their own axis. This precise movement allows one axle shaft to accelerate while the other simultaneously slows down. This guarantees that traction is maintained, ensuring your driving is safe and controlled.

What are the main types of car differentials?

Understanding differential designs is crucial for maximising your vehicle's performance and traction. These systems manage how engine torque is delivered to the wheels under various driving conditions, ensuring you maintain grip when you need it most.

The standard setup you encounter is the open differential. While it splits engine torque equally (50/50), its major flaw is clear: if one drive wheel loses grip (e.g., on ice), all available power routes to that spinning wheel, severely limiting your forward movement.

To overcome this limitation, consider the limited-slip differential (LSD). Utilising internal clutches or viscous fluids, the LSD automatically redirects torque away from the slipping tyre towards the wheel maintaining better adhesion, significantly boosting usable traction in challenging conditions.

For extreme off-road capability, the locking differential is indispensable. When activated, it mechanically forces both axle wheels to rotate at the exact same speed. This guarantees maximum, consistent power delivery, regardless of individual wheel resistance, making it ideal for rugged terrain.

Finally, modern design offers the advanced electronic torque-vectoring differential. This sophisticated system precisely controls power distribution dynamically, dramatically enhancing handling and cornering stability beyond purely mechanical limits, giving you superior control and responsiveness.

Where is the differential located on different vehicles?

If you drive a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) car, the setup is integrated. The differential is built directly into the transmission housing, forming a single, cohesive unit known as the transaxle. This means the mechanism is located at the front of the vehicle.

What are the signs of a failing differential?

A failing differential presents unmistakable warning signs that demand your immediate attention. If you notice any of these symptoms, you must investigate the issue promptly to prevent further damage.

Start by listening closely for unusual sounds and checking for physical indicators:

  • listen for a prominent high-pitched whine that shifts pitch with your speed,

  • notice grinding or howling when accelerating,

  • check for specific clunking sounds when navigating a turn,

  • feel excessive drivetrain vibrations, particularly when the vehicle is under strain,

  • smell a strong burning odour, indicating critical overheating of the lubricating fluid,

  • look for dark, oily leakage beneath the car or rapid, uneven tyre wear.

Why is checking differential fluid important for maintenance?

Gear oil is the lifeblood of your differential. It lubricates internal components, preventing friction and overheating. Over time, this essential fluid degrades, becoming contaminated with tiny metal particles from normal wear. Worn seals are also a common cause of complete leaks.

Driving with low or dirty fluid accelerates component wear, rapidly leading to severe internal damage. Ignoring this maintenance forces costly future interventions, often requiring a complex differential rebuild or a full replacement, incurring substantial labour charges.
