Complete Wing Mirror Units and Replacement Mirror Glass
The wing mirror, often referred to as a side or door mirror, is a crucial exterior safety component. If this unit sustains damage, you must accurately assess the extent of the fault to determine the correct repair solution.
If the fault is minor—for example, only the mirror glass is fractured—replacement is usually straightforward and highly cost-effective. This is the simplest fix for drivers.
However, the repair becomes significantly more complex if the mirror housing is broken or if internal components, such as the electrical adjustment mechanism, have failed. In these scenarios, a complete wing mirror assembly replacement is mandatory for safety and legal compliance.
Before ordering any parts, always pinpoint the precise fault first. This ensures you purchase the exact component your vehicle demands.
Electric, Heated, and Power Folding Mirror Features
Modern wing mirrors significantly enhance safety and convenience. When replacing a unit, precise feature matching is crucial for correct function.
If your mirror is electric, controlled by a cabin switch, ensure the replacement has the exact remote adjustment capability. For clear visibility in cold weather, confirm if you need a heated mirror (demister), which uses internal elements to rapidly clear ice and fog.
Protect your mirror in tight spaces with Power Folding Mirrors (PFM). Be aware: forcing a PFM manually often requires system resynchronization. Upgrading from a basic manual fold is typically complex and costly.
Advanced vehicles may feature auto-dimming, which uses electrochromic technology to reduce headlight glare. To guarantee seamless integration with your vehicle’s wiring loom, you must meticulously match all specifications before purchase.
Wing Mirror Components: Covers, Housings, and Indicators
Your wing mirror is designed to be modular. This means many external components can be replaced individually, significantly reducing repair costs compared to fitting an entire new assembly.
The main protective shell is the mirror housing (or casing). It safeguards all internal wiring and mechanisms. The exterior finish is provided by the detachable mirror cover. When replacing this cap, ensure it precisely matches your vehicle's specific colour code.
Modern side mirrors integrate vital safety features, such as the turn signal indicator lights (side repeaters). If an indicator fails, usually only that module needs replacement. Sophisticated units may also feature a puddle lamp, which illuminates the ground when you open the door. If damage is confined to these outer elements, replacing the specific component saves you substantial money over buying a whole new mirror.
Types of Mirror Glass: Convex, Aspherical, and Fitting Options
The choice of mirror glass is crucial for road safety, directly influencing your field of view. You will typically encounter three main types: flat, convex, and aspheric.
Flat glass provides a true, one-to-one reflection, vital for precise distance calculation without distortion. In contrast, convex glass curves outward, greatly expanding your field of vision (FOV). Be aware that this makes objects appear smaller and deceptively further away.
The most advanced option is aspheric glass. This clever design features a distinct curvature transition near the outer edge, merging the flat glass’s accuracy with a wider peripheral view to minimise blind spots effectively.
When replacing the glass, ensure you choose a unit that is pre-bonded to a durable plastic backplate. This component is engineered to clip securely into the adjustment motor mechanism. Always ensure it locks firmly into place, providing a robust fit superior to simple adhesive patches.
Offside vs. Nearside Mirrors and UK MOT Requirements
The MOT test has strict, mandatory requirements for your vehicle's mirrors. You must understand these rules to ensure your vehicle passes inspection.
The Offside (O/S) mirror, which is the driver's side mirror, is absolutely mandatory. If this critical component is missing entirely, your vehicle will face an automatic MOT failure.
Crucially, the glass surface must also be pristine. Any damage that obscures or distorts your view is a serious defect, often resulting in an MOT failure or at least a significant advisory note. Always check the glass for cracks or severe pitting.
The rules for the Nearside (N/S) mirror (passenger side) are different. It is not always legally required, provided your interior rear-view mirror offers sufficient visibility. However, for maximum road safety and the best possible field of view, we strongly recommend you ensure both exterior mirrors remain in perfect working order.
Common Faults and Fitting Your Replacement Door Mirror
Side mirror issues usually fall into two categories: mechanical (physical damage to the housing) or electrical (failure to adjust). If your mirror won't move, the trouble is often electrical. You should check for a defective motor, actuator, or a blown fuse. For vehicles with advanced features like Blind Spot Detection (BSD), a thorough inspection of the main wiring harness and associated connectors is crucial.
Replacing the entire mirror assembly requires significantly more effort than just swapping the glass. Follow these critical steps for successful installation:
-
access the space behind the interior door panel,
-
use a specialized trim removal tool to safely detach the panel,
-
crucially, always disconnect the primary electrical connections before removing the old unit,
-
during reassembly, take care to secure all fragile plastic clips,
-
verify the trim caps fit correctly to ensure a robust and professional finish.
